Florida Keys are a group of islands in the southeastern part of Florida. They are located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The islands are: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Duck Key, Big Pine Key and Key West, which is known to be the place that’s closest to the heart of Ernest Hemingway. In fact, there is an annual Hemingway’s Festival celebrated in the island of Key West in the month of July. The whole group of islands has evident Victorian and Queen Anne architecture. So if you’re a fan of this type of architecture, you will basically love this place. You can enjoy watching cabaret performances, touring the tropical home of Ernest Hemingway and eating dishes that are a fusion of Cuban, Mexican and Spanish cuisine.
You can get to Florida Keys by plane, by ferry, by bus or by car. You can pass through U.S. Highway 1 by way of the well known Overseas Highway if you’re traveling by car. If you’re planning to travel by ferry however, there are ferries available to sail from Fort Myers to Key West that takes around 3 hours. Most of the ferries are large enough to carry 20 to 30 passengers. If you wish to take a plane ride, you will have to get to Miami first and then to either the seaplane base on Marathon Key or the Key West International Airport. If you travel by bus, Greyhound has terminals on Marathon, Big Pine and Key West.
There are a lot of hotels for you to stay in and a lot of seafood restaurants where you can grab for something to eat. But you should try Key Lime Pie, which uses limes exclusively cultivated in the island, as well as conch, which is a shellfish usually served in chowder. You can also grab a drink from some bars especially in Key West as it’s a famous bar-hopping town.
